The History

The first Mississauga Santa Claus Parade was held in 1974, after a group of dedicated volunteers from the Junior Chamber of Commerce decided that Santa Claus should make a formal appearance in the growing city of Mississauga.  In the early years, the Parade was held in downtown Mississauga, with varying routes along Hurontario Street and Burnhamthorpe Road, ending at Square One Shopping Centre.  The Knights of Columbus (KOC) then took over the Parade planning in the late 1980s at the request of the Mayor. The KOC partnered with the Mississauga News and arranged for a toy drive to coincide with the Parade.  This toy drive proved to be very successful and in later years was redirected to other community agencies.

In early 2002, the Streetsville Business Improvement Association (BIA) was asked by the City of Mississauga if they would be willing to manage and host the Parade, and they readily accepted.  The historic Village of Streetsville has had a long history of welcoming Santa Claus, with reports going back as early as 1964, that Santa was seen on a fire truck at the volunteer Fire Hall.  The Village also had its own small community Parade beginning in 1990, which was organized by the Streetsville BIA.  In 1996, there were 17 local groups represented in the Parade, led by the Streetsville Pipes and Drums and the Streetsville Legion Colour Party, as they have done from 1990 to the present.  A favorite entry in the early years of the Parade was a steam tractor with Jim Laidlaw at its controls.

The Parade, which is now called the Streetsville Santa Claus Parade, is held on the last Sunday in November.  The Parade represents various local community groups and takes about an hour to make its way down Queen Street South, from Ontario Street to Church Street, to the delight of between 40,000 and 50,000 parade-goers, who excitedly welcome Santa Claus to the historic Village of Streetsville.
